Remembering Matthew Kurnicki

It is with deep sadness and fondness that we mark the passing of Matthew Kurnicki, longtime staff member of Proscenium. He passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family.

Matthew worked as an architect for nearly seven decades, forty of which were in Greater Vancouver. He was part of Proscenium at the firm’s inception in 1996 and worked on some of our firm’s iconic early projects like the Stanley Theatre and the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Matthew returned in 2005 to oversee the firm’s technical design and documentation standards.

Matthew never truly retired and practiced as an architect at Proscenium until his final days. At the office, we will greatly miss his cheery presence, eye for detail, and tireless work ethic that kept our projects in line.
